Frequently Asked Questions

Celie is for people with any health complaint, big or small.
We particularly want to help people who have had a hard time getting answers from mainstream medicine. If you are diagnosed with a vague catch-all condition, or your diagnosis keeps changing, or you can’t even get a diagnosis, it’s probably time to try Celie.
We also know that sometimes healthcare stops short of addressing everything people need. If you’re diagnosed but struggling with medication side effects, managing your treatments, or general quality-of-life stuff that your doctor doesn’t seem to want to talk about, Celie is for you too.

Symptom tracking apps are great, but they can be hard to keep up with. Celie takes one detailed history when you sign up, so you don’t have to keep on top of updating her every day. She also does something no existing tracker does, which is use population data from the rest of her user base to give you brand new insights that you wouldn’t be able to get from your symptoms alone. You also get the opportunity to match with and talk to other people struggling with the same symptoms, and read treatment reviews prioritised by relevance. And as if that’s not enough, by telling Celie about your symptoms you are helping drive the next generation of health research.
-
Celie is not a diagnostic machine, and she can only make suggestions based on patterns she observes in your data. You will still need to work with your doctor to pinpoint a diagnosis. But if your doctor is not helpful or receptive, Celie can help you advocate for yourself by showing you diagnoses and treatments that helped other people with symptoms like yours.
-
Celie is for you, too. We know that every patient is unique, that diagnostic categories can be big and blurry, and that the experiences of two people with the same diagnosis can vary a lot. Celie doesn’t only group users by diagnosis, but shows you information from people whose experience is most similar to yours to help you make more informed decisions about your health.
We also know that some things fall through the gaps in even the best medical care, and doctors don’t always have all the information to help. Other patients are a goldmine of tips to maximise medication effectiveness and reduce side effects, and Celie leverages this with smart recommendations to help you thrive while in treatment.
-
Online groups can be seriously useful, but people we talked to also reported finding them depressing, toxic, or just kind of overwhelming. On Celie, you can chat with other users if you like, but you also can just log on to find out what medication works best for nausea and go back to bed without having to talk to anyone. Plus, Celie uses smart matching to show you the most relevant advice first, so you don’t have to sift through pages and pages of posts to try to find the right information. We also offer a variety of tools for different questions, like treatment reviews, diagnostic suggestions and medical research news explained in plain language. And did we mention you’ll be helping research?

Celie uses a machine learning technique called unsupervised learning to create a complex map of chronic illness patients, so that she can look for patterns in the symptoms people experience. If you’d like to learn more about how Celie works, check out our video.

Celie’s job is to build a complex map of connections between patients and to help them to work together to create a better understanding of chronic illness. Her name was inspired by mycelial networks, an amazing natural phenomenon that connects trees and allows them to share information and resources so that the whole group can flourish.
